ÁbacoClub February 2020 – Activities Calendar

Conference and coffee break about the importance of nutrition for seniors

Activity date: 04/02/2020

Quirónsalud puts at our disposal one of its nutritionists to tell us about the importance of what we eat when we are seniors.

This interesting conference, free for members of ÁbacoClub, will take place on Tuesday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the conference hall of the Hospital.

Quirónsalud and Ábaco Advisers have signed an alliance with many benefits for club members, such as 2 free medical checkups. You have all the details of the agreement in your personal Abaco Online account.

During the event, in addition to enjoying a coffee break, you will have the opportunity to meet the Quirón Personal Advisor for the club members, Beatriz de la Fuente, who will be happy to answer all the questions we have about the benefits of this agreement.

You can now sign up for this event through Abaco Online:

Workshop about mobility and stability at Makai Café in Orihuela Costa

Activity date 12/02/2020

As we get older, our bodies get rusty. We start to get aches and pains and end up getting bad habits which makes things even worse. We don’t realize that movement is what avoids this.

The first step is recognizing our weak points. Just by improving our posture, we help our bodies. Let’s take a minute and think about this: Close your eyes, make a visual picture of yourself in your mind. Is your back straight, are you slouched, have you shrunk? Do your joints hurt? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will appreciate the little adjustments we will do in this workshop.

During these workshops, we will use sticks and bands and take things little by little to achieve a better you. More range of movement, body awareness, muscle activation, and flexibility. All of this will also help us in stability and coordination, thus reducing the risk of injuries. The earlier you begin making these changes, the sooner your body will appreciate it. 😉 So come on…sign up now!

Afterwards, we will enjoy a healthy breakfast at Makai Café, Marc knows exactly what we need.

P.S. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in and if anyone has their own yoga mat, bring it , if its a nice day, we will do the workshop on the beach.

Wine and Tapas Tour to Cehegín in Murcia, declared Rural Wonder 2019

Activity date 21/02/2020

As you may already know, Murcia has been chosen Gastronomy Capital 2020! This will give us many oportunities to participate in many activities and workshops which are planned throughout the región of Murcia. As I was looking for a place to do a tapas route, I discovered the small town of Cehegin which is full of history and places to see.

We will visit various historical sights (accompanied by a tour guide who speaks English) such as el Palacio de Jaspe and la Iglesia de Santa Maria Magdalena as well as the Wine School where we will enjoy some winetasting. Afterwards, we will visit some of the bars who are participating in the Tapas Tour and try some of their delights. The city and municipality of Cehegín may not be as famous as other Spanish cities, but don’t let that deceive you! This small but wonderful tourist destination is well worth a a visit. You’ll be amazed by some of the many interesting places to explore, as well as things to do and see at this hidden gem.

Meeting time:

8.40 a.m. – Torrevieja (Carrefour Gasoline Station Parking Lot)
9.00 a.m. – Orihuela Costa (Entrance at Hotel La Zenia)

Our idea is to be back by 18.30 p.m.

New Spanish Class at Lolyta Food & Café in Torrevieja

Activity date 26/02/2020

One of the most mentioned suggestions on the survey taken was Spanish classes. We would like to encourage you to join our conversation classes. The most important thing about learning a language is putting aside our bashfullness. We will begin by learning and reading short phrases out loud and commenting on them amongst ourselves while we enjoy a nice breakfast at Lolita Food and Cofee in Torrevieja from 12:30 to 14:00h.

At our last class we made “cheat sheets” where there were easy questions and phrases which could used in different situations such as when you meet someone or you want to order in a restaurant. The Abaco Club members were surprised that they could actually learn a little bit of Spanish in such an easy way. They ordered their own coffees and listened while others did the same and learned from other peoples’ answers or mistakes as well as how to pronunciate correctly. Everyone ended up losing their bashfulness and participating. We were all thrilled with the results.

In each class, we will do more of these easy excercises and eventually start a book club.

Empezaremos pidiendo nuestro propio café. Hablaremos bastante Splanglish, lo sé, pero se trata de aprender mientras pasamos un rato agradable y nos conocemos.

How many of you Googled for the translation???

Wouldn’t you rather join us and practice your pronunciation and become a little more fluent?

We hope to see you there.

Do you live outside Spain and have a recipe that you would like to share?

If the answer is YES to the two questions, then you are one of the candidates to be part of the cookbook that we want to make with the international recipes of our clients.

Since we know that by living abroad you will not be able to participate so actively in the weekly activities of the AbacoClub, we have thought of a project in which you can participate from wherever you are and thus maintain contact until we see each other in Spain.

This project, which will last 1 year, is intended to preserve that recipe that works well for you or that has a beautiful story behind it. In addition, the benefits we get from the sale of the book will go to a charity project of your choice.

When you have time, at your own pace and without any stress (you know that stress is prohibited in the lifestyle in Spain) and if you are interested in participating in the book, please respond directly to this e-mail and Sofia will tell you more details.

And if you live in Spain or are here these days, next Wednesday, January 29 we will have a meeting at 11:30 at the La Andaluza Restaurant in Torrevieja to launch the project. If you feel like coming, remember to sign up through your personal Abaco Online account:
